Do you have an additional PAN card? Here’s how to submit to it and avoid penalties

The government has introduced PAN 2.0, a new initiative to improve the management of the Permanent Account Number (PAN) system. As part of this update, the government urged individuals to surrender their duplicate PAN cards to avoid penalties or legal action.

PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department and serves as a key proof of identity. Having multiple PAN cards is not allowed and may result in financial penalties or other consequences.

Why do people have two PAN cards?

Sometimes, individuals apply for a new PAN number instead of requesting amendments to their existing card. This leads to duplication.

If a person does not receive his PAN card on time, he can apply again instead of checking its status online, which may result in more than one PAN number being issued.

  • Change of surname after marriage:

Women who change their surname after marriage sometimes apply for a new PAN number instead of updating their current surname.

Some people deliberately apply for multiple PAN numbers to avoid paying taxes or commit fraud. This is illegal and may result in penalties.

What is the penalty for having multiple PAN cards?

Under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act, people with more than one PAN can be fined ₹10,000.

How to return additional PAN?

If you have more than one PAN number, you must submit a duplicate to avoid penalties. You can do it online or offline.

1. Online process:

  • Go to the NSDL website and fill the ‘Changes or corrections in existing PAN details/PAN card reprint’ form.
  • Check the box to opt out of additional PAN numbers and provide their details.
  • Upload the necessary documents, pay the fee and submit the form.
  • Save the confirmation generated after successful payment.

2. Offline Process:

  • Fill Form 49A to make changes or corrections in your PAN.
  • Provide the details of the PAN number to be transferred and send it to the nearest PAN service center.
  • Keep a copy of your confirmation for future reference.
