Eric’s Question: Creative ways to get involved with your family

Eric’s Question: Creative ways to get involved with your family

Dear Eric: I read the Invisible Dad column who felt left out of his family life. I have a suggestion. When my dad retired, he began writing a newsletter every few months to keep members of our extended family updated on what was going on in other members’ lives.

My dad used to send everyone a typed newsletter back then, but now of course it could easily be done digitally. From time to time he would call a few family members and “interview” them about what they were doing etc., getting any news they wanted to share.

He then transcribed the interviews and mailed them to each family member. He did this periodically, changing members. It has been a great way for our distant family to stay connected, so I hope it will not only brighten Invisible Dad’s life, but also help the rest of his family stay better connected. Most importantly, it would be a great way to get him more involved in your family life.

Dear News: What a wonderful gift your dad gave to your family. As someone who writes a personal newsletter every week, mostly for fun, I love how it allows me to keep in touch with friends and strangers alike. This is a great idea for families. I also suggest recording interviews with family members. I believe these are priceless documents that convey both history and feelings. They can be done directly on your phone.

Dear Readers: No matter how you spend your time this weekend, I hope you will take the opportunity to reach out to someone significant in your life by phone or in person and let them know you are grateful for them. I am grateful that I can spend this time with you every day.
