Rapist who preyed on defenseless teenager suffering from heat in a wooded area sentenced to six years in prison

A man who raped a defenseless teenager suffering from the heat on a summer’s day has been jailed for six years.

Liam Mair, 27, raped his victim in a wooded area off Glasgow’s Kelvin Walk in the city’s botanical gardens.

The judge told Mair at the High Court in Edinburgh: “Her young age and vulnerable condition must have been obvious to you.”

Judge Alistair Watson said evidence showed Mair was walking through the area with colleagues when he came across the wandering victim, “suffering from the effects of heat”.

The judge said: “The evidence shows you took advantage of her.” The victim stated that she was in significant pain during the sexual assault.

He said it was clear the crime had caused long-term psychological harm to the victim.

Mair, from Newcastle, previously denied committing sexual offenses against the teenager on June 28, 2021, but was found guilty of rape on a footpath between Queen Margaret Drive and Queen Margaret Road.

Defense lawyer Sarah Livingstone said the offense was completely out of character for Mair, who has a good work record. She told the court: “He was always polite and courteous towards me.”

“He realizes that a long prison sentence is inevitable,” she said.

The judge made a non-harassment order prohibiting Mair from communicating or attempting to communicate with the victim or coming within 100 meters of her for an indefinite period.

Mair was also told he would be placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.
