Two sentenced to life in prison for murdering a man two years ago

Gurugram: Police said on Thursday that a city court has sentenced a man and a woman to rigorous life imprisonment for brutally beating a man to death by smashing his head and face with a stone and a rod at Ghata village in Sector 58 around two years ago.

They said district and sessions judge Tarun Singal also imposed fine ₹10,000 on the convicts identified as Mohammad Yakub, 32, and Soniya, 31, while on Wednesday they were found guilty under Sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

Investigators said the deceased was 30-year-old Asif Khan, who along with the two convicts belonged to Bagrain in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh. Asif was an auto rickshaw driver in Gurugram.

Advocate Jitender Saini, who represented the complaint Prem Singh, an eyewitness, and Ahsan Khan, Asif’s uncle, said that Soniya and Asif were in a relationship for seven years and were about to get married, but later she became friends with Yakub, which Asif was told.

“Asif canceled the wedding and Sonia feared that Asif might use their conversations and photos to threaten her. So she and Yakub planned to delete Asif’s phone data or murder him,” Saini said.

Yakub called Asif to a secluded place in the Ghat and forced him to drink beer around 4 p.m. on September 27, 2021.

“He asked Asif to delete the data from his phone, but he refused even in his inebriated state. Then Jakub called Sonia and they both murdered him,” he added.

After informing the police headquarters, the team reached the spot and arrested Soniya after a chase. According to the police, Jakub was also later arrested.
