Two people have been killed and another seriously injured in an accident involving two trucks on the N10 highway in the Eastern Cape.

Note the poor visibility, which was reported to be the cause of the accident

The cause of the accident is poor visibility

Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesman Unathi Binqose said the accident occurred due to poor visibility in smoky conditions due to field fires.

โ€œOne truck (Man) driven solely by a man was traveling from the direction of Middelburg when it collided with a second truck (Scania) that was traveling from the direction of Cradock. There were two people on board, a man and a woman.

โ€œTwo passengers in the Scania truck, a man and a woman, died at the scene, while the driver of the second truck sustained serious injuries and was taken to Cradock Provincial Hospital for further medical attention. Poor visibility is suspected to be the cause of the accident,โ€ Binqose said.

Binqose added that a case of culpable homicide has been opened with the South African Police Service in Cradock for further investigation.

Plane crash

Last week, three people were injured when a light plane crashed in Pretoria, north of Johannesburg.

It is understood that the plane crashed near Wonderboom Domestic Airport.

Best Care Emergency Medical Services (BCEMS) spokesman Xander Loubser said authorities responded to reports of a plane crash just after 10 a.m. Sunday.

โ€œInitial intelligence included guidance to โ€œlook for the circling twin propeller,โ€ which led rescue teams to locate the crash site in a field near the Sinoville/Annlin area.

Loubser said that upon arrival, paramedics discovered the twin-propeller plane and immediately began examining the three people on board: the pilot and two passengers.

โ€œThey all suffered minor injuries and received on-site care from our advanced life support team.โ€

The South African Civil Aviation Authority’s Accident and Incident Investigation Division (AIID) told The Citizen that it is gathering information that will form part of an interim report that will be issued 30 days after the accident.
