INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indiana State Police are investigating after a Southport police officer shot and killed a suspect early Monday morning.

State police said that just before 12:30 a.m., a Southport Police Department officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop near the main entrance to the Berkley Commons Apartments at 8000 Madison Avenue, state police said.

The driver led the officer to the 2000 block of Appleton Drive, then exited the vehicle and attempted to flee.

“During the foot pursuit, it is believed the suspect fired at least one shot and the officer fired his weapon at him,” state police said.

The man with the gunshot wound was treated at the scene until medics arrived and then transported to a local hospital.

State Police say his injuries are not life-threatening and he is currently in custody on outstanding warrants.

No one else was injured in the shooting.
