Jonathan Capehart compares Trump’s rally to the 1939 Nazi rally

MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart drew “chilling” similarities between the former president Donald Trump Sunday’s MAGA rally at Madison Square Garden and the Pro-American Rally organized there in 1939 by supporters of the Nazi German dictator Adolf Hitler.

During the rally, many speakers gave speeches with a heavy emphasis on immigration before Trump finally took the stage. In his own speech Trump unveiled his proposed deportation policy and described election day as “liberation day” of the immigrant “occupation” and repeated his accusation that Democrats were “enemy from within”.

After deliberating on his show Sunday night, Capehart reacted sharply to Trump’s call for “mass deportations” of immigrants and called for a campaign to “return Madison Square Garden into a training ground for extremism.”

Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden came days after his former chief of staff publicly described his former boss as a fascist. But it is the rallies that are taking place right now, you see them on the screen, in this place, that are particularly terrifying because in 1939, over 20,000 supporters of another fascist leader, Adolf Hitler, filled the Garden for a so-called pro-American Rally, a rally in which speakers uttered anti-Semitic rhetoric from a stage decorated with Nazi banners. When a Jewish protester ran onto the scene, the Associated Press reported: “A dozen stormtroopers immediately pounced on him, knocking him down and beating him as he held his head in his arms. Most of his clothes were torn from his body. He was later fined for disorderly conduct.”

Now, against this historical backdrop, Donald, a man who has threatened to use the military against opponents he calls “domestic enemies,” who has threatened to use the military to suppress what he considers lawless cities, and to use those troops to carry out mass deportations of immigrants, once again turns Madison Square Garden into a training ground for extremism.
