The Fatal Powys rail disaster was cleared when the Cambrian line reopened

A week later from shocking events on the Cambrian linenear Llanbrynmair, two trains involved in a collision were removed from the scene.

The trains involved in the crash, which killed one person and injured 15 others, have been moved to the depot for further investigation.

Transport for Wales rail chiefs have confirmed the line has reopened.

It followed significant disruption to rail services, including a disaster in Mid Wales which affected the Transport for Wales route through Shropshire, from Shrewsbury to Birmingham.

In the latest update, Ryan Williams, technical director for Transport Wales, said both trains had been moved to the company’s Machynlleth depot.

He said: “I just wanted to provide an update on the recovery of the two Class 158s that were tragically involved in a low-speed collision on the evening of October 21.

“During the week we worked with the relevant agencies, our Network Rail partners and the emergency services to recover trains from the tracks safely and in a controlled manner.

“I can confirm that both trains are currently at our depot in Machynlleth. They will remain here for further testing and then move to another location for further repairs.

“I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of Transport for Wales to thank everyone who was involved in the recovery of the trains, particularly our customers, for their patience and understanding as we work through this complex process.”

Nick Millington, Network Rail’s route director for Wales and Borders, also confirmed that an investigation into the crash was continuing, but said testing had shown it was safe to reopen the route.

He said: “I have been working very closely with Transport for Wales this week in managing this incident.

“Such incidents, although very sad, are extremely rare on our railway. We continue to operate one of the safest railway networks in Europe.

“The on-site investigation has been completed, although the investigation is ongoing.

“We have carried out very vigorous safety checks in the area and have run test trains in the area to ensure the railway is safe. Once this is done, we will reopen the railway line.”
