Pittsburgh Steelers QB undergoes MRI after injury

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the most surprising storylines in the NFL this season. They are currently 5-2 and tied with the Baltimore Ravens for the AFC North lead.

The Steelers rode quarterback Justin Fields for the first six weeks, but then handed the reigns over to the veteran Russell Wilson in their Week 7 contest against the New York Jets. Wilson stole the show and seemingly relegated Fields to a backup role for the remainder of the regular season. Still, the Steelers have two legitimate weapons at QB, and their head coach has continually expressed his desire to keep them both involved.

Now it appears that Fields may not be available at all for the Week 8 game against the New York Giants and could miss time after that. The Steelers added him to theirs latest injury reportmaking him questionable against the Giants.

According to NFL insider Jay Glazer, there are concerns regarding his hamstring injury. On Fox Sports, the NFL reported that Fields will likely need an MRI to confirm the severity of the injury and determine if there are other concerns.

“I just talked to Mike Tomlin on the phone,” Glazer reports. “He said Justin Fields tore his hamstring at the end of the week. He doesn’t think he’ll be able to play tomorrow night. He’s not sure yet, he’ll probably have to have an MRI after the game, so it’ll all depend on Russell Wilson.”

While Glazer wasn’t very specific in his update, an MRI scan would be a concerning development. This reflects the Steelers’ cautious and thorough approach to Wilson when he suffered a calf injury early in training camp. The concern is, will this keep him out for a few weeks or will it just be a minor ailment for Fields? The Steelers cannot afford to have him unavailable for any length of time.

Without Fields, Wilson will be the starter and Kyle Allen will be his backup. Allen appeared in one game for the Steelers this season, completing his lone pass attempt for 19 yards to assist the injured Fields.
