Jackson State Homecoming Schedule and Parade

Jackson State Homecoming Schedule and Parade

play

Jackson State University’s homecoming season is coming to an end. This year, the long-awaited homecoming parade will take place on campus, leading to an exciting start to Saturday’s football game.

The parade will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 2, on Dr. Robert Smith Sr. Parkway, and its grand marshal will be Pro Football Hall of Famer and JSU alumnus Robert “Dr. Doom” Brazile.

In recent years, the JSU homecoming parade has been held downtown. Homecoming Parade Committee Chairman Arron Richardson said the decision to hold the parade on campus again was based on a desire to further highlight the JSU community.

The move will also allow for better flow for other homecoming events taking place on campus. This year, the parade tradition of throwing out candy returns. Richardson said in recent years, throwing candy to crowds of spectators was not allowed, but the return of the parade to campus made the tradition possible again.

Richardson said the JSU community supports the parade’s return to campus.

“When they found out we were having a parade on campus, the surrounding community really embraced us,” Richardson said.

This year’s JSU homecoming theme is “Thee House Party,” a tribute to the popular ’90s hip-hop duo Kid n’ Play. The duo launched the “House Party” film series.

Although JSU changes its homecoming theme every year, there is always nostalgia at the heart, especially with alumni returning to their alma mater to share stories and relive their college years. Richardson said he expects no fewer than 5,000 graduates to return for the ceremony.

Richardson, who serves as chairman for the first time this year, expressed gratitude to his committee colleagues who work tirelessly to plan homecoming each year. He said JSU strives to make homecoming bigger and better each year, and the team is already thinking about next year’s events.

There will be two community events on campus on Tuesday, October 29. “Monster Mash Octoberfest” is an event for children and families that will begin at 4 p.m. in the Pearl Street parking lot.

The “Party Through the Decades” step show will begin on Friday, November 1 at 7 p.m. at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. General introduction tickets are $20 each and JSU student tickets are $10. Doors open at 6 p.m

“Yard Fest” will also take place on Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Heritage Garden. Richardson said this event is his favorite because it allows graduates to relive their time on campus.

“Alumni can come back and tell their stories about how they felt when they were at the Yard,” Richardson said. “They’re coming back. They want to return the favor. They want to have a great time. There is a party atmosphere. “Thee house party” is the best slogan we can have because we want to have a great time all week long. “
