A driver faces manslaughter charges in an accident in northeast El Paso

The driver was arrested and charged murder while intoxicated charged in a crash that killed another man at a northeast El Paso intersection over the weekend.

Kevin Anthony Meacham, 29, of Chaparral, New Mexico, is charged in the death of Ruben Felipe Acosta, 51, of El Paso, in a crash Friday evening, Oct. 25, at the intersection of Gateway North Boulevard and Sun Valley Drive, El Paso police said Paso in a press release.

An investigation by the Special Traffic Investigation Unit found that at 10:56 p.m., Meacham was driving a brown 2017 Nissan Titan at a high rate of speed as he exited Patriot Highway, police said. Meacham was on Gateway North Boulevard when he attempted to turn right onto Sun Valley Drive.

Meacham was unable to make a turn due to his speed, and the truck then struck a silver 2011 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Acosta, which was stopped at a light in the westbound lane of Sun Valley Drive. Police suspect speed and alcohol as factors in the accident.

Acosta later died from his injuries in hospital.

Meacham was arrested on suspicion of DUI manslaughter and remained in the El Paso County Jail on $150,000 bail as of Monday, October 28. Jail records show Meacham was arrested in August by El Paso police on suspicion of drinking alcohol in a public place.

The Gateway North/Sun Valley crash was the 55th traffic fatality in El Paso this year, compared to 62 at the same time last year, according to Police Department data.
