Roadside shooting: 1 injured in shooting on SB 15 in Cajon Pass; highway lanes closed for several hours

HESPERIA, Calif. (KABC) — Two people were injured when a driver opened fire on another person on Highway 15 in Cajon Pass in a case of road rage, the CHP says.

The agency says one of the victims was shot in the leg and the other was injured after colliding with the gunman’s car on the highway.

The incident occurred near the Oak Hill Road ramp around 9:30 a.m

Investigators say that there was probably an accident on the road involving the drivers of a white Ford F-350 pickup and a black Volvo XC70. While driving, they exchanged words and honked.

The Volvo driver then pulled out a gun and fired at the truck. At least two bullet holes were visible on the driver’s side of the pickup truck after the incident. Police say the driver of the Ford was shot in the leg.

The Volvo then collided with a third vehicle, a white Toyota Tundra pickup truck, and the Volvo fled the scene.

“As the vehicles continued southbound, an interaction occurred and the two vehicles collided, resulting in the black Volvo colliding with another uninvolved vehicle, which was a white Toyota Tundra,” said CHP Capt. Lance Berns.

Southbound lanes of Highway 15 near Cajon Pass were closed for several hours and didn’t reopen until around 2 p.m., causing a massive traffic back-up.

The drivers of both trucks were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities are still searching for the black Volvo, which appears to have front and rear bumper damage.

The CHP provided advice to drivers who may be upset by the actions of other drivers.

“Drive to your destination, obey speed regulations and do not interact with other vehicles,” Berns said. “If an incident occurs as a result of an unsafe lane change, don’t turn it into something more serious.”
