Here’s why New York City public school students are only on campus 4 days a week for the next 3 weeks

Due to several upcoming holidays, New York City public school students will only attend campus four days a week for the next three weeks.

Students will first enjoy the upcoming one three-day weekend as schools are closed on Friday, November 1 — the day after Halloween — celebrate Diwali, according to Department of Education (DOE) Academic Calendar.

Diwali is the festival of lights and one of the most important events celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists. It is celebrated in October or November, according to the Indian calendar. This year it starts on November 1 and the celebrations last five days.

Next week, schools will also be closed on Tuesday, November 5, due to election day. This allows many schools to act as voting centers.

This means students will go to class on Monday, November 4, and then return on Wednesday, November 6 for the remainder of the week.

Students have another three-day weekend to look forward to next week – schools will be closed on Monday, November 11, for Veterans Day.

The federal holiday is observed this year on November 11 and is a day of remembrance of the end of World War I and an opportunity to honor military veterans of the US Armed Forces.

DOE Public School Calendar includes approximately twenty days off between the first and last day of classes. The calendar lists time off for religious holidays, weekly breaks for winter break, mid-winter and spring breaks, and federal holidays.

For those looking further ahead, there are plenty of days off before the end of the year.

After these three holidays, students will not have any time off until Thanksgiving break on November 28-29. The last day of classes before the break will be Wednesday, November 27, and children will return to campus on Monday, December 2.
