A 24-year-old Brazilian au pair pleaded guilty late Tuesday to manslaughter for her role in the BDSM murder of her boyfriend’s wife.

Magalhaes was caring for the daughter of 37-year-old Christine Banfield and 39-year-old Brendan Banfield at their residence in the suburbs of Washington

The young au pair soon had a torrid affair with Brendan Banfield, an influential IRS investigator, right under his wife’s nose.

“Earlier today, Juliana Peres Magalhaes pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of Joseph Ryan on the morning of February 24, 2023. Today’s agreement represents a significant step forward in this case and represents important progress in our pursuit of justice for the victims and their families,” he said Fairfax County attorney Steve Descano.

“Much of the information that led to this agreement cannot be made public at this time due to the upcoming criminal trial against the second defendant in this case.”

Magalhaes was first seen as the lone killer in the gruesome double murder of Christine Banfield and Joseph Nathan Ryan, but homicide detectives held back and let the case unfold.

Ryan was allegedly lured to the residence for BDSM sex with Christine. Police say the nanny and Brendan Banfield planned to make the scene look like a surprise tryst.

However, as the months passed, the new two became careless and openly bantered with each other. Newly framed photos of the two alleged conspirators, found in Banfield’s bedroom after the killings, show the husband and au pair hugging, with the nanny’s head resting on the IRS special agent’s shoulder.

In September, Brendan Banfield was charged with four counts of aggravated murder and one count of using a firearm in the commission of a crime.

The pair claimed Ryan stabbed Christine Banfield and Brendan shot him mid-attack. Police now believe Ryan was a goat and was lured by Christine’s fake profile on a sexual fetish dating site.

Detectives believe he arrived at the residence and got into what he believed was his role.

“There was no break-in,” cops told reporters on the day of the murder. “It wasn’t a home invasion. Here’s what I can say with certainty right now: He didn’t force his way into the house. I don’t know yet the exact nature of his presence in the house, but we are working hard to find out.

Investigators later discovered fake messages between Ryan and a woman believed to be a nanny posing as Christine.

When Brendan, Magalhaes and their daughter returned home that day, they found Ryan with a naked Christine, who had been stabbed multiple times in the neck. Brendan then shot Ryan with his service weapon.

The au pair allegedly took another gun from the safe and put a bullet into Ryan’s chest. Magalhaes denied any sexual relations with Brandon at the time.

As part of the au pair’s agreement with prosecutors, she agreed to cooperate in the case against Brendan Banfield. Prosecutors told the court they planned to recommend a lenient sentence for the young woman.

Magalhaes will be sentenced following the trial of Brendan Banfield on February 3, 2025.
