After a car accident, a train hits a vehicle on the tracks in the northern suburbsAuthorities said an Amtrak train struck a vehicle that was stopped on the tracks in Morton Grove after a car crash Thursday evening.

MORTON GROVE, Ill. (WLS) — Two cars collided in the northern suburbs on Thursday evening, causing one of them to slide onto the railway tracks.

The driver managed to escape before the vehicle was struck by an Amtrak train.

The crash happened around 7:45 p.m. near River Drive and Lehigh Avenue in Morton Grove, on tracks Amtrak shares with Metra.

Police said the driver of the Acura collided with a car parked on Lehigh Avenue before it drove onto the tracks, causing the vehicle to become disabled. The 56-year-old Acura driver was arrested for driving under the influence.

Metra’s Milwaukee North line was operating with delays as tracks are expected to be closed overnight.

No one was seriously injured in the accident.
