South Louisiana Community College Reveals New Mascot | Education

This week, South Louisiana Community College announced its first mascot: Owls! The owl symbol was chosen after a student-led selection process that also involved teachers and community members.

The owl is said to symbolize wisdom, adaptability and focus. Owls are known across cultures as symbols of intelligence and learning – qualities that school principals say blend well with college students.

According to the school’s press release, here’s why the owl is a perfect fit for the school:

  • Sharp vision in the dark: Just as owls move clearly at night, school students are armed with support to help them find their way, even when the path seems uncertain.
  • Adaptability: Owls thrive in a variety of environments, just like students who balance study, work and personal life.
  • Focus and Determination: Owls are known for their quiet, deliberate movements – reflecting student success that is a cornerstone of the school’s mission.
  • Curiosity and wonder: With their mysterious charm, owls inspire the pursuit of knowledge, sparking a curiosity that mirrors learning at a local college.
  • Night learners: Owls are nocturnal, embodying the idea that learning occurs at all hours of the day and night because students need a flexible approach to education.
  • This is the first time a community college has chosen an official mascot.

“I’m thrilled we finally have a mascot and I think an owl is a perfect fit. It represents everything we are about – staying focused, adapting to challenges and learning every step of the way. It brings us all together and showcases what makes our community unique,” said Tanjunika James, president of the Student Government Association.

“We always listen to our students and they thought it was time for a mascot to represent who they are now,” said Anne Falgout, director of strategic communications at the school. “The owl is the perfect symbol of the wisdom, resilience and adaptability that our students embody every day.”
