The driver allegedly tried to hit Harris supporters at the VFW Bruce Post – Macomb Daily address

Resident of St. Clair Shores resident Melissa Crook said she’s lucky to be alive after a man allegedly tried to run her over with his Mercedes while she was handing out campaign materials with the Macomb County Democratic Party outside the VFW Bruce Post on Jefferson Avenue. 13.

Crook said a local political group rented the site, previously occupied by Trump supporters, for $100, and a team of volunteers worked in the tent, handing out lawn posters and other materials to multiple Democratic candidates.

“A few people mistakenly thought we were Trump people, but when they saw we weren’t, they just left,” Crook said.

However, one of the men drove into the VFW parking lot and allegedly began shouting anti-gay slurs at several people, including Crook.

“He also shouted at a woman using a walker and her daughter and said very offensive things to them about being overweight,” Crook said. “We asked him to leave because we were clearly not the Trump tent he was looking for.”

Crook claims the man fired one more parting shot before shooting at the car and driving directly toward her and the group of volunteers.

“He shouted that he couldn’t wait for Trump to win so that ‘people like you would be exterminated.’ Crook said. “He fired his vehicle right at me and I backed up and he stopped less than two feet away from me.”

At that point, Crook said she used her cell phone to call St. Paul’s police. Claire Shores. The man in the Mercedes then fled in his vehicle, and one of the other volunteers managed to obtain a partial license plate number before merging into traffic on Jefferson Avenue.

Officers arrived at the scene and spoke to Crook and other witnesses, but said it was difficult to locate the vehicle, which only had a partial registration number,

“The next day, the man who tried to run us over was stopped for a traffic violation, and an officer from St. “Clair Shores stated that the partial registration number and description of the car matched what was stated in the police report we submitted,” the fraudster said. “He apparently had a misdemeanor warrant and his car has now been impounded in connection with this separate incident, but he admitted to the officer that he was at Bruce Post and met with us.”

Crook said a detective from St. Clair Shores told her the case had been turned over to the Macomb County Hate Crimes Unit.

Macomb County Attorney’s Office Communications Director Dawn Fraylick confirmed that the case is under review and that after receiving additional information from St. Clair Shores will determine what charges will be brought against the suspect. Fraylick said she expects a decision to be made early next week.

The Macomb County Democrats are scheduled to meet at the Bruce Post VFW on Sunday, October 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Crook said she plans to attend.

“I’m not going to cower and hide my support for a candidate who helps bring people together,” Crook said. “I’m not going to hide.”

Police in St. Clair Shores did not respond to a request for comment on this story.
