A man has died after a police standoff in Fairfield

A police standoff in Fairfield ended with the death of a suspect after a shooting Friday night, police said.

Police responded to the 2800 block of Elmhurst Circle for reports of a disturbance in the area. There they learned that the 58-year-old resident was harming other family members, destroying the exterior of the house and threatening to set it on fire.

A man and a woman, related to the suspect, managed to escape to a neighbor’s house. Police say callers told them the suspect was armed with a shotgun outside the home, had more weapons inside the home and was threatening to harm others.

The man then retreated into the house while officers developed a de-escalation plan, police said. There, he allegedly pointed a gun from a second-story window. The officer then shot the suspect.

According to police, the suspect retreated into the house and a SWAT unit arrived at the scene.

Officers found a dead man in the house. The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear.

Family members and the man were taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries allegedly caused by their relative. The services did not specify the extent of the injuries sustained.

No officers were injured in the shooting.
