Although Eagles will be without a wide receiver DeVonta Smith on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., with a hamstring injury, the team has several options on the roster who could see more action. They decided to activate a player from outside the injured reserve who could have influenced two phases of the match.

The Eagles activated the winger Britain Covey off injured reserve and elevated tight end CJ Uzomah Saturday. Covey was sidelined after suffering a broken shoulder blade during the Eagles’ Week 3 win over the New Orleans Saints. The injury occurred just as he was starting to see more action in the passing game. Covey’s training window opened on Wednesday and his injury report on Friday listed him as questionable, with no injury update at this time. However, the Eagles felt comfortable enough to put him on the field. They also didn’t have to make any appropriate moves to activate Covey after placing defensive end Bryce Huff on injured reserve.

Covey connected on all seven of his targets this season for 34 yards, with two of those resulting in first downs. Before his injury, Covey was the team’s leading punt returner, recording one return for nine yards. He could find himself playing a slot machine, with AJ Brown AND Jahan Dotson taking most of the latches of the wide body to the outside. Covey’s ability to move in tight spaces and find lanes could make him a viable option on wide receiver screens. His talent for locating weak spots in zone defense, limiting plays and catching the ball is another advantage he has.

Uzomah stepped up in Thursday’s win against the Washington Commanders, playing three offensive snaps in three Eagles sets during short-yardage situations. For Uzomah, the opportunity to play in a meaningful game was welcome.

“I felt great and it was great to be back on the field with the guys,” Uzomah told NJ Advance Media. “Honestly, he’s the best. There is nothing better. Getting a W also makes him the best. Just being there with the guys and being able to make a little contribution, even though it was just a few plays, was a lot of fun.
