Students vandalized the main gate of Dhaka National Medical University and Hospital (DNMCH) in the capital’s Old Dhaka after 18-year-old student Abhijit Halder of Dr Mahbubur Rahman Molla College died during treatment.

The students alleged medical malpractice and irregularities behind Abhijit’s death.

According to media reports, students armed with sticks gathered outside a hospital in Old Dhaka in the capital at around 1 p.m. today (November 24).

Additional police forces were deployed to maintain law and order, and soldiers were seen trying to calm protesting students inside the gate.

“On November 16 morning, a student named Abhijit Halder was brought to the emergency ward of the hospital. After tests, he was diagnosed with dengue fever and was subsequently admitted to the medical ward where he received necessary treatment,” Deputy Director for Administration, National Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, Dhaka, told the media Dr. Rezaul Haque.

“During treatment, his condition worsened and after obtaining consent from his guardian and consulting specialists, he was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU). Despite all medical efforts and specialized intervention, Abhijit died on November 18,” he added.

Rezaul said the hospital authorities had carried out necessary procedures to hand over the body to Abhijit’s relatives and had suspended all bills after his death.
