A passenger was killed in a crash in Catawba County

One person was killed and four others were transported to the hospital following a single-vehicle crash in Catawba County on Saturday evening, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

At approximately 11 p.m., deputies responded to a call on 70 near Heart Drive.

The Highway Patrol said five passengers were driving a Honda Accord east on U.S. 70 when the driver lost control, went off the left side of the road and struck several trees.

The passenger, 20-year-old Rocky Houston, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The driver, 21-year-old Adriel Rodriguez, and three other passengers were also ejected from the vehicle and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. All four survivors were transported to hospital.

Police said excessive speed and disability contributed to the accident. The patrol said charges would be filed after further investigation.
