The shocking case of a gynecologist who “raped” 87 women in Norway – Firstpost

The shocking case of a gynecologist who “raped” 87 women in Norway – Firstpost

The case is considered the biggest sexual abuse scandal in Norway’s history.

Arne Bye, a former gynecologist, was accused of sexually assaulting 87 women aged 14 to 67 and filming the events both at his clinic and in their homes.

At the time of the attack, the youngest alleged victim was 15 and the oldest was 67. Bye pleaded guilty to three counts of rape and 35 counts of abuse of position, Sun reported.

If convicted of the charges, he faces up to 21 years in prison.

Shocking details of the case

The charges against the 55-year-old revealed disturbing details of his crimes.

According to the indictment, Bye allegedly placed objects described as “deodorant-like,” “bottle-shaped” and cylindrical in shape on the women during examinations, without medical justification.

One woman testifying at the Trondelag court said: “I thought I was going to die.”

Another woman who initially visited Bye for a sore throat says that after one of the invasive procedures, she ended up on a bench in her underwear.

“I thought it was my doctor, so I did what he said,” she said.

Many women have reported similarly invasive and unpleasant experiences. Some claimed that Bye allegedly “rubbed his stomach” during gynecological examinations, the British daily reported. The indictment says these actions “occurred quickly and unexpectedly” in Frost’s office.

The small town of Frosta, with a population of just 2,600, is shaken by the reports because Bye has been a public figure and trusted doctor for years.

Authorities investigating the former gynecologist found more than 6,000 hours of video, much of it showing gynecological examinations performed without the patient’s consent.

Officials described the recordings as “sensitive and detailed.”

It is worth noting that the court got acquainted with the graphic materials. A video presented in court shows Bye setting up multiple cameras in front of the tests.

In one recording, linked to “woman #18,” Bye can be heard asking the woman if it hurts and then warning her, “This is going to hurt.”

Despite initially claiming that the tests were not sexual in nature, Bye partially admitted to the rape charge in his testimony. Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported.

State prosecutor Richard Haugen Lyng told the court: “We have video footage of the robbery itself.”

“In this sense, we have a quite specific evidentiary situation in this case, because a large part of the indictment is illustrated with video material,” says the prosecutor.

Bye defended the recording and claimed it was intended to protect him from potential lawsuits, although he insisted he never saw the recordings outside of the investigation.

The 19th woman to testify in the trial against Arne Bye revealed that he repeatedly asked her to sit in the gynecologist’s chair, even though she had no prior abdominal complaints.

She said the tests “took a long time” and added that they were all painful.

Another shocking detail is that the woman’s daughter and sister are also among the alleged victims in the case.

Concerns about Bye date back to 2006

Allegations against the former gynecologist first emerged in 2006, when another doctor at a hospital in Levanger reported a disturbing complaint from one of Bye’s patients.

The patient alleged that Bye massaged her genital area during the examination. She also stated that other patients had reported similar experiences. Bye denied the allegations at the time.

Despite early concerns, no action was taken until August 2022, when health authorities notified police of possible criminal acts. A formal investigation was initiated, leading to charges being laid in 2023.

Bye held the position of doctor throughout the investigation and was not temporarily arrested. Police said they would continue to monitor the situation as there were no grounds for an arrest.

The process continues.
