Man dies in custody after chaos at Malaysian KLIA

KUALA LUMPUR – A 30-year-old foreign national has died after being detained for causing a disturbance at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the man, who was traveling from the UK to Phuket in Thailand, transited at KLIA on November 23.

“He caused a disturbance and behaved aggressively during transport.

“He was then detained, but before that he injured two policemen and an auxiliary policeman,” he said in a statement on November 25.

The suspect lost consciousness while documenting the arrest, he added.

“He was treated by the KLIA medical team, but the doctor later declared him dead.

“The body was sent to Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang for autopsy.

“However, the cause of death has not yet been determined as we are waiting for the pharmacist’s report,” he added.

Datuk Hussein said the case had been classified as sudden death and the investigation was being conducted by the Detainee Penalty and Death Branch of the Department of Integrity and Compliance.

“They will thoroughly investigate the case before handing the results of the inquest to the coroner.

“The matter will also be referred to the IPCC,” he said, referring to the Independent Police Conduct Commission. STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
