HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 77-year-old Hawaii man has been charged with attempted second-degree murder after allegedly beating his wife with a shotgun.

Police say that on Nov. 22, shortly before 10:30 p.m., a man who called dispatchers identified himself as Lowell Thomas Pofahl and said he was trying to kill his 76-year-old wife.

When patrol officers arrived at their home in Nanawale Estates, they found the victim lying in a pool of blood with serious, life-threatening injuries, including a fractured skull, bleeding to the brain, a concussion, a partial amputation of his thumb and multiple puncture and lacerations.

She was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center and then, due to the severity of her injuries, flown to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where she remained in the hospital in stable condition.

Police arrested Pofahl and found various weapons in his home, including a shotgun that Pofahl allegedly used to beat and injure the victim.

In addition to attempted murder, Pofahl was charged with first-degree assault, abuse of a family or household member and carrying or using a firearm in furtherance of a separate crime.

His bail was set at $1.6 million.
