A military judge sentenced Pfc. Shreyan Karki, 20, sentenced to four years and two months in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting another soldier. The sentence came immediately after his conviction by a military jury on November 22 in Kaiserslautern, Germany.

Karki was also found guilty of assault resulting in beating. In addition to being sentenced to prison, his rank was reduced to E1 and he was given a dishonorable discharge.

The victim and Karki recently arrived at their new duty station in Landstuhl, Germany in December 2023, where they were both assigned to the Medical Readiness Battalion of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

After the victim fell ill in Karki’s barracks room on December 13, 2023, he moved her to an extra bed in his room and began attacking her.

The victim reported the incident to the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division and an investigation was launched. During the trial, the victim testified about the incident, and her testimony was supported by DNA evidence, as well as eyewitness testimony and medical testimony from a nurse practitioner specializing in sexual assault.

“I would like to thank the victim for her courage in reporting the sexual assault,” said Maj. Sara Nicholson, chief of the military office in Kaiserslautern. “I also thank CID and the US Army Crime Lab for their hard work on this case. The severe penalties the defendant faces are consistent with the impact this violation will have on the victim for the rest of her life.”

“Sexual assault investigations remain a top priority for the European Field Office,” said Special Agent in Charge Ryan Hall. “Today’s sentencing reflects Army CID’s commitment to pursuing justice and protecting the military community from sexual predators.”

Upon his release from prison, Karki will be required to register as a sex offender and will be subject to federal and state sex offender registration requirements that may remain in effect for the rest of his life.

The investigation was conducted by the Kaiserslautern CID Field Office, and the case was handled by Nicholson and Capt. Conner Pursell, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Office of the Staff Judge Advocate.

The Military Office of Special Trial Counsel is composed of specially trained military attorneys, lawyers and support staff responsible for the expert and independent prosecution of murder, sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, kidnapping and other serious crimes.
