Officials say a man arrested after barricading himself in a Taunton apartment allegedly exchanged fire with police

A man was arrested after he barricaded himself inside a Taunton apartment on Wednesday and allegedly exchanged fire with police before officers persuaded him to surrender peacefully, officials said.

The Taunton Police Department said officers responded to a residence on Hodges Avenue around 9 a.m. for a welfare check and upon entering the home found a man barricaded in the bathroom.

The man, whose name was not released, allegedly fired at police and at least one officer returned fire, but no one was hit by bullets, police said in a statement.

Taunton police called additional units to the scene and secured the area in an attempt to persuade the man to surrender. The department said after about an hour, the man surrendered and was taken to Taunton Police Station for booking.

Police described the incident as “isolated” and said there was no ongoing threat to the community. Police said the scene was being processed by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.

No further information was immediately provided.
