IIT Roorkee students dancing video goes viral – IIT Roorkee student dances to Taras at college fete Viral video divides Internet

An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee student has gone viral after a video of her dancing performance at the university’s annual festival sparked a heated debate online.

Shalini Gaur, dressed in a black top and skirt, danced with full enthusiasm to the hits of Bollywood actor Sharvari’s Taras on the stage during Thomso, the annual cultural festival of IIT Roorkee.

Although Gaur shared the short clip on Instagram, it quickly spread across platforms, with many X-users criticizing her performance as “vulgar and disgraceful.” Some users argued that such dance performances should not be “allowed” on college campuses, sparking a broader discussion about cultural expression and norms in educational settings.

However, many social media users came to Shalini Gaur’s defense, insisting that there was nothing inappropriate about her dance performance.

One user noted: “You can enjoy college life and there is nothing vulgar about it. Take a stand on the bad things, but don’t objectify everything.” This sentiment was welcomed by several others who argued that society’s tendency towards morality must change.

Celebrating self-expression and the joy of university life is important and it is necessary to create an environment where people can freely showcase their talents without fear of judgement, several people said.
