According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a home on Sandy Pines Drive on Oct. 23 just after noon by the homeowner. Elroy Clarke. The sheriff’s office said Clarke tried to remove Troy Johnson, who lived on the property.

“He was basically a landlord type tenant, Troy was there, they had an argument, he wanted Troy to leave,” Sheriff Bill Prummell said during a news conference Friday.

Sheriff Prummell said that at the scene, officers discovered that Clarke himself had a warrant for his arrest.

Body camera footage of the incident was released on Friday, which shows officers trying to arrest Clarke. CCSO said Clarke was uncooperative and deputies used stun guns, pepper spray and a “less lethal” shotgun with bean bag rounds to take control of Clarke, but none of them worked.

Ultimately, Clarke lunged at the deputy, who fired his service weapon, killing Clarke, according to CCSO. After the incident, Sheriff Bill Prummell said a grow operation was found on the property, leading to charges against Johnson.

According to the probable cause affidavit, investigators found “humidifiers, tents used to grow marijuana, and two rooms containing suspected marijuana in various stages of growth” inside a “barn-like structure.” The PCA says investigators found a total of 384 suspected marijuana plants.

Additionally, the PCA states that investigators discovered that “there was a corner in the room that appeared to be used as a bedroom. In the same area were suitcases containing men’s clothing, bottles of what appeared to be urine, and two photo IDs bearing the name of the heir to the throne, Emperor Troy Bey.

The PCA also states that other IDs were found belonging to “Troy Bey,” which was Johnson’s nickname. Investigators also found a 12-gauge shotgun in the living quarters, according to the PCA.

According to the investigation, Johnson now faces possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, production of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession or use of drug paraphernalia.

Johnson’s arraignment is scheduled for December 2.
