Davidson High School supports students battling leukemia

MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) – This is not an ordinary band concert. All this to help Jadier Morejon, a sophomore at Davidson High School, who has been fighting leukemia since December last year. The diagnosis ended J.D.’s high school career and sent Davidson into shock.

“When he finally told us, we were all devastated,” said Davidson High School student Sagedie Diaz. “I think he was the last person we expected because he’s always so cheerful.”

“I started chemotherapy immediately and did it for three months,” Jadier Morejon said. “The doctors told me I still had some cancer left, 00.4%, and those cells were resistant to chemotherapy.”

JD underwent automotive T-cell therapy, but complications followed. In August, he was admitted to Children’s and Women’s Hospital and flown to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he received a heavy dose of chemotherapy that destroyed the rest of his T cells, but still had a long way to go.

“My kidneys failed, my lungs and my liver failed,” JD said. “It’s mostly been my recent recovery. I had to start practically from scratch.”

While JD was away, his classmates wanted to help. Some of them started selling baked goods to raise money for his recovery. His bandmates also turned this morning’s Halloween concert into a charity concert, with all proceeds from ticket sales going directly to their classmate.

“My intention for the band was to give him our full support and do everything we can to make sure we don’t forget about him during his treatment and to let him know that we can support him,” said Davidson Band director Tim Beattie.

The concert was full of music, Halloween costumes and good fun before the next football game. All this to show that Davidson High School is JD Strong.

“It’s great for me to see that I can do this for him,” Diaz said. “What really makes it worth it is his smile. It’s all worth it.”

“I feel like for me it means staying strong, not giving up, so I can keep fighting whatever comes my way,” JD said. “I’m ready to see everyone again. There are many friends I haven’t seen for a long time.

JD is currently in remission and was able to go home last week. If you would like to help JD and his family, you can donate to their GoFundMe Here.
