An 18-year-old motorcyclist died in a crash at East Speedway in Midtown

An 18-year-old motorcyclist died in hospital Tuesday after crashing his bicycle into East Speedway downtown on Monday night.

According to a press release from the Tucson Police Department, Athen Riley was traveling westbound on the track at a speed greater than the posted speed limit of 35 mph when he swerved to avoid hitting a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. The second vehicle attempted to make a left turn onto North Stone Avenue.

According to the press release, trying to avoid the car, Riley left the road and hit a concrete structure. The press release said the impact threw Riley into another concrete structure. He was wearing a helmet at the time.

The news release said Riley was transported to Banner University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

The investigation is ongoing.
