Body Camera: Deputy Inspector Shot in the Head during Chilling Standoff

SHELDON, IL – An investigation by Illinois State Police and the Iroquois County State’s Attorney has concluded that a deputy-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a suspect in connection with an alleged kidnapping was “justified.”

Andrew Roselius, 37, Ashkum, was shot and killed by an Iroquois County deputy on September 1, 2024 after shooting of a deputy in Newton County, Indiana during a confrontation with law enforcement, the office of Iroquois County State’s Attorney James Devine said.

Roselius was pronounced dead at the scene, while Cpl. Brandon Schreiber he died of his wounds 10 days later at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, according to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department, Illinois State Police, Newton County Sheriff’s Department and Kentland Police Department in Indiana responded to the alleged kidnapping that occurred on September 1.

The vehicle of Roselius, the suspect in the case, was found in rural Iroquois County. Roselius refused to stop for law enforcement and drove to Newton County, Indiana. He then returned to Iroquois County and struck another vehicle in Sheldon.

After the stop, Roselius’ vehicle was surrounded by law enforcement officers. He was reported to be armed and suicidal, the state attorney’s office wrote.

“A confrontation occurred between law enforcement and Mr. Roselius while he was seated in his vehicle,” the state attorney’s office said. “After repeated requests by law enforcement for Mr. Roselius to show his hands and exit the vehicle, Mr. Roselius displayed a revolver and fired one shot, striking a Newton County, Indiana, deputy in the head, resulting in him being critically injured.”

The Iroquois County deputy returned fire and struck Roselius in the head.

The Illinois State Police Area 5 Task Force investigated the shooting.

“After a thorough review of witness statements, body camera footage, cruiser video, ballistics testing, Illinois State Crime Laboratory analysis and autopsy results, all relevant investigative information was provided to the Iroquois County State’s Attorney’s Office,” the state’s attorney said in a statement. he wrote. “Iroquois County State’s Attorney Jim Devine has concluded that the death by law enforcement of Andrew Roselius on September 1, 2024 was justified.”

The National Prosecutor’s Office will not take any further action in this case.
