Juan Mata becomes co-owner of MLS team San Diego FC

Former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata announced that he has joined the ownership group of MLS club San Diego FC.

The 36-year-old is yet to retire from football, playing in the Australian A League for Western Sydney Wanderers.

Mata follows in the footsteps of David Beckham as a former Premier League player and owned an ownership interest in an MLS club, but became the first active player to join the club as an owner.

The midfielder has never played in MLS, but spent time in Japan’s J1 league before moving to Australia.
