Former Sask. Party MLA Greg Lawrence pleads guilty to assaulting his wife

Former Saskatchewan party MLA Greg Lawrence pleaded guilty Wednesday to assaulting his wife.

In January, Moose Jaw Wakamow MLA resigned from the Saskatchewan Party caucus following a police investigation into “historical complaintsHe resigned the day before the charges were brought and then served as an independent until the 2024 elections, in which he did not run again.

In January, he was charged with assault and choking.

On Wednesday in Moose Jaw provincial court, Lawrence pleaded guilty to assault and the Crown dropped the choking charge.

The former MLA was released on parole and is currently on a 12-month probation period.

The release will be absolute and Lawrence will face no criminal record if he complies with the court’s terms. Conditions include that Lawrence make no contact with the victim and remain calm and of good behavior.

Court documents say Lawrence attacked the victim in February 2019.

A September 2023 press release from the Saskatchewan Party quotes Lawrence as saying he would not stand for re-election in 2024 due to “serious injuries to motorcycle accident last month

Lawrence has been MLA for Moose Jaw Wakamow since 2011.
