PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – High pressure parked over the Ohio Valley allowed for calm winds and mostly clear skies Sunday morning.

Temperatures are close to or below freezing in many places. Patchy fog is possible over the river and valley around sunrise, otherwise it will start to mix as the day progresses.

A band of mid-to-high clouds will also move over our southernmost counties this morning, but they will clear out by late morning by noon, allowing for mostly sunny skies.

Seasonal temperatures are expected Sunday afternoon, with highs in the upper 50s to 60s, followed by lows in the low to mid 30s on Monday morning.

At the beginning of the week, the high pressure ridge will intensify, which will favor the return of warm air from the southwest. Temperatures will be well above normal, especially Tuesday through Thursday next week. On Tuesday, an initial increase in atmospheric moisture accompanied by weak disturbances could produce isolated rainfall in areas north of Pittsburgh towards I-80 and Lake Erie during the morning hours.

Otherwise, temperatures will continue to rise to unseasonably high levels on Wednesday and Thursday, with multiple record highs likely across the Midwest and southern states.

Record highs are possible on Halloween depending on cloud cover and the timing of the next storm system. Sunday morning’s model guidance slowed the development of an upper-level storm system, causing the front to advance eastward on Thursday, so the odds of us breaking the record at least on Halloween look a little better.

As the front moves into the region accompanied by a low-moisture tongue, a few showers and possibly a few thunderstorms are possible Thursday evening after sunset, continuing into Friday morning. I anticipate the extent and intensity to be higher in our western and northern counties before dissipating as it reaches drier, more stable air toward the Laurel Highlands.

The weather will be slightly cooler towards the end of the coming week, but temperatures will still be above average.
