Magalli-Volpe, verdict

Giancarlo Magalli lost his legal “battle” with Adriana Volpe. The host was ordered to pay €700, legal fees and €5,000 in damages to the civil party for defaming her on Facebook with a comment referring to the on-air fight: “He tried to present it as an insult to women, but I was just angry at her, not at women whom I have always respected and who might be more offended if they knew how she worked for 20 years.” A phrase written under a 2017 post in which Volpe criticized him. A sentence derived from an argument that took place in March of the same year during the live broadcast of the “I Fatti Vostri” program.

Dispute

On this occasion, the dancer joked about the presenter’s age, asking him: “You’ll be 70 soon, right?” But after an initially irritated response: “Mind your own business, okay? No, you really can’t… you’re turning 44, so?” – the attack came: “You are a pain in the neck.”

Giancarlo Magalli: “Adriana Volpe? I didn’t want to offend her, now we could do a show together. He was bullied at school with De Sica.”

From there, the argument moved to social media, where the words written by the 77-year-old did not escape the attention of the woman, who replied: “It’s very serious! He insults me, harms my husband and Rai,” the complaint filed before filing.

Two points of view

During the “discussion” in court, the host’s lawyer said: “This event has negatively affected both Volpe’s professional and private life, as unfortunately the news has spread that she works at Rai not because she is a capable and prepared host, but because She allegedly provided favors of a sexual nature. This information reached her 13-year-old daughter, who, while typing her mother’s name into Google, came across Magalla’s defamatory statements. However, the opposing party argued: “My client never referred to the sexual meaning: it was misunderstood. And above all, it was made clear that Volpe had never experienced sexual harassment at work.”

Verdict

However, on October 2, the verdict was handed down and Magalli was sentenced, as he commented for Corriere della Sera: ‘One day in court, after another exhausting trial, we couldn’t stand it anymore. And then we hugged and moved as if everything was an absurd misunderstanding, but for me it was.” And this sentence did not please Volpe, who a few days later replied in Oggi: “The thought that it ended with ‘tarallucci e vino’ offends me.” And then she added her version of events. “The truth is that in court I was the one who went to Magalli and said: ‘Let’s hug each other, let’s close this bad chapter once and for all.’ I did it too and above all for myself, it was a therapeutic hug, I finally got rid of the history that polluted my soul, but reducing everything to an “absurd misunderstanding” does not suit me at all ruined, my career turned upside down: “absurd misunderstanding ” seems a bit reductive.”

Precedents

Yesterday’s verdict is not the only one. In 2021, a court in Milan ordered a conditional payment of PLN 25,000. euro – apart from 14 thousand fines and payment of legal costs to Magalli. In an interview for the weekly “Chi?” in 2017, the host allegedly referred to the dancer and her television career when talking about the Weinstein and Brizzi cases (and alleged sexual favors to advance her career). After the verdict, Magalli wrote a post on Facebook explaining that his statements had been misunderstood. And he ended with a jab: “In this case, by the way, it was me, the journalist who interviewed me and tried to get me to talk about Volpe (acquitted), and the director of the magazine who published it. For him the complaint was withdrawn. And who are we talking about? But Alfonso Signorini, with whom Adriana has been working since then.
