Londonderry: A woman suffered “serious” injuries following a sexual assault

Police say a 50-year-old woman suffered serious facial injuries during a sexual assault in Londonderry.

The incident happened on Lecky Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

She was approached by an unknown man who dragged her into a nearby alley, where he sexually assaulted her, repeatedly punched her in the face and slammed her head against a wall.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said: ‘She suffered serious facial and other injuries in the terrifying situation, from which she was only able to escape after her attacker released her.

“The woman then managed to raise the alarm and call for help, and the suspect fled the scene on foot.”
