Brandin Cooks returned to practice this week, with optimism that he will be able to play on Sunday when the Dallas Cowboys take on the Washington Commanders.

The Cowboys opened a 21-day training window for Cooks on Wednesday, and there was talk he could be activated from injured reserve in time for Sunday’s game. It won’t happen this week. The Cowboys did not activate the former Oregon State Beavers star from injured reserve on Saturday.

Cooks will miss his seventh straight game with a knee infection following surgery. Cooks had not played since Week 4 and had struggled prior to the procedure, catching just nine passes for 91 yards and a touchdown in a season that was deemed lost.

Cooks, 31, will likely finish the season with the worst numbers in all major categories, which is not what he wanted when he entered free agency after the season. The 11-year veteran said during the week that his knee “feels great” and should be given a chance to finish the season on a high to improve his marketability.
