Suicide of Karnataka Bhovi Corporation scam suspect in Bengaluru linked to harassment of CID officer – Karnataka News

A 35-year-old woman, identified as Jeeva, died by suicide at her home in Padmanabhanagar, Bengaluru, Karnataka. Jeeva, who supplied materials to Bhovi Corporation, was recently investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for financial transactions linked to the corporation.

Days before her death on November 22, Jeeva participated in an investigation with CID officers, during which she was reportedly issued a summons for further questioning. After her suicide, an 11-page death certificate was discovered, which included allegations of harassment by CID investigating officer DySP Kanakalakshmi. The note detailed the mental issues Jeeva experienced during the hearing, which she believes led to her decision.

The note made several allegations against DySP Kanakalakshmi, accusing the officer of subjecting Jeeva to severe physical and mental abuse during the investigation. Jeeva’s sister Sangeetha filed a complaint at the Banashankari police station, which led to a case being registered. An FIR has been registered against the CID officer, who is currently being investigated for her alleged role in the events that led to Jeeva’s death.

As per details contained in Jeeva’s FIR and death certificate, she was under investigation in connection with the Siddapura case, which pertained to financial transactions related to the Bhovi Corporation. According to reports, Jeeva was summoned for questioning despite the Supreme Court’s order allowing hearings to be held through video conferencing from November 14 to 23. The officer allegedly ignored this order and insisted on an in-person interview.

The death note mentioned that DySP Kanakalakshmi subjected Jeeva to cruel treatment, including humiliating her during interrogation. Jeeva accused the officer of forcing her to strip down to her underwear and making degrading comments. Jeeva further informed that the officer demanded income certificate, rejected the documents submitted by her and allegedly extorted Rs 25 lakh from her.

“Why should people like you live? Go die,” Jeeva quoted the officer as saying, which added to the emotional toll she endured. The harassment reportedly continued throughout the period from November 14 to 21. Jeeva claimed that her store was inspected and during which time she was publicly insulted.

On the morning of November 22, Jeeva was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her home. The discovery of the death note left by Jeeva has raised serious concerns about the actions of CID officers during the investigation.

Sangeetha, Jeeva’s sister, has now called for legal action against DySP Kanakalakshmi, holding the officer directly responsible for Jeeva’s death. She promised to file a more detailed complaint in the coming days to ensure justice for her sister.

The Banashankari police station has initiated an investigation into the case and the authorities are looking into the allegations made in Jeeva’s death note. Police are also investigating DySP Kanakalakshmi’s conduct during investigation sessions, focusing on potential violations of law and misconduct.

The Bhovi Development Corporation scam that came to light in 2021-22 allegedly involved misuse of funds meant for loans to Bhovi community members under an employment scheme. Earlier this year, multiple FIRs from Siddapura, Doddaballapur and Kalaga were consolidated and handed over to the CID for investigation.
