Husband and parents-in-law accused of 24-year-old’s suicide | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Ghatkopar police have booked the husband and in-laws of a 24-year-old woman who committed suicide on Sunday. Police said the deceased married the accused in October last year. Police said that soon after the wedding, her husband and his family started harassing her physically and mentally, prompting her to take the drastic step.

The case was registered by the deceased’s brother as their parents died 12 years ago. He told the police that his sister married the accused on October 8, 2023. After two months of marriage, the couple started arguing over minor issues.

He alleged that in October this year, his sister saw photos on her husband’s mobile phone of a girl with whom he had a relationship before marriage. This caused more friction in the marriage as the deceased left her husband’s house in Ghatkopar and stayed with her brother in Dombivali. At that time, the deceased attempted suicide when her husband came for her by force, but her brother managed to stop her in time. Finally, after some persuasion, she returned to her in-laws’ house.

On Sunday, while the family was eating dinner, she locked herself in the bedroom. When she did not respond to repeated calls from her family, the door was broken down and it turned out that she had died by suicide.

Ghatkopar police have registered a case under section 108 (abetment to suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act against her husband and his family.
