The world’s oldest man has died in England

London — The world’s oldest man, John Tinniswood, died at the age of 112 in the nursing home where he lived in Southport, northwest England, the Guinness Book of Records said Tuesday, citing his family. Tinniswood was born in Liverpool on August 26, 1912 and died on Monday.

He in April he became the oldest man in the world after the death of 114-year-old Venezuelan Juan Vicente Perez.

“His last day was surrounded by music and love,” the family said in a statement, also thanking “all those who cared for him over the years.”

Born the same year the Titanic sank and surviving both world wars, Tinniswood told the Guinness Book of Records that the secret to his longevity was “pure happiness”.

“You either live a long life or you live a short life and there’s not much you can do about it,” he said.

Nevertheless, he recommended moderation in everything to maintain health.

“If you drink too much, eat too much or walk too much, if you do too much of anything, you will eventually suffer,” he added.

During the Second World War, Tinniswood held an administrative role in the Royal Army Pay Corps and later worked on the accounts of oil giants Shell and BP.

He was a lifelong supporter of Liverpool Football Club and ate fish and chips every Friday. Staff at his Southport care home described Tinniswood as a “big talker”.

The oldest living woman in the world is currently 116-year-old Japanese Tomiko Itooka.
