Springboks are dropping like flies: Latest injury list update

Springboks are dropping like flies: Latest injury list update

Over the last few days, the number of Springbok players who have embarked on the November tour has increased significantly.

BIG PICTURE

The Springboks traveled to the UK as part of their traditional end-of-year tour, which consists of three tests against Scotland in Edinburgh, England in London and Wales in Cardiff in November.

It has been well documented that Rassie Erasmus is targeting a clean sweep of this tour, which will likely see the Springboks back to the top of the world rugby rankings by the end of the year.

However, for this to happen, the Springboks will have to do without several key players who have been sidelined due to various injuries, which is a serious problem in itself.

SPRINGBOK SQUAD FORCED TO MAKE CORRECTIONS

Last Tuesday, Erasmus named a star-studded 34-man squad for the Springboks’ tour, but injuries soon forced him to change personnel.

First utility forward Jan-Hendrik Wessels had to withdraw from the game due to an ankle injury he suffered while on duty with the Bulls. In an unconventional move, Erasmus decided to expand his squad from 34 to 35, calling up both hooker Johan Grobbelaar and midfielder Wilco Louw in Wessels’ stead.

In another blow to Erasmus’ starting lineup, Damian Willemse suffered a groin injury on Saturday, ruling him out of the Springboks’ tour.

Now there are reports that the injury casualty of the newest Springbok is prop Frans Malherbe. According to Rugby365Frans Malherbe suffered an injury and was therefore unable to take his place in the squad that went to the training camp in Jersey on Sunday.

This has yet to be confirmed by SA Rugby, but it will be interesting to see who gets called up as Vincent Koch and Louw are currently the only two specialist props in the group, although Thomas du Toit can play either side of the front row.
