It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the apparent physical altercation, but Chicago police confirmed late Saturday that officers did respond to the scene near Madison and Kildare to reports of a “large disturbance” call.

Demarco Hunter, 25, will be charged with one felony count of aggravated battery.

Michael Fitzgerald, 37, was charged with aggravated battery on a peace officer and an additional four misdemeanors for resisting arrest.

Pastor Preston Allison said he was driving in the area when he saw the commotion and stopped. He told ABC7 that officers tried to de-escalate the situation when people began attacking them. That’s when the officer was injured.

Reverend Allison said it happened outside the church where the funeral was taking place.
