Chicago man charged with DUI and reckless homicide in Little Village crash

The man was charged driving under the influence during an accident in which his passenger died on Sunday morning Village neighborhood.

According to police, 35-year-old Angel Rodriguez was allegedly driving under the influence when he crashed his vehicle in the 4500 block of West 26th Street around 2 a.m.

His 26-year-old passenger died in the accident. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Alvaro Gomez-Mendez.

Rodriguez was arrested more than an hour later in the same apartment building where the accident occurred.

He was charged with one count of reckless homicide and one count of aggravated DUI manslaughter, both felonies. Rodriguez also faces misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol concentration greater than 0.08. He was also fined for failing to comply with the speed limit.

Rodriguez has a detention hearing scheduled for Monday.
