Stewart Community Engagement Forum on November 8 at the University of Warsaw

The University of Wyoming invites the community to the Stewart Community Engagement Forum on Friday, November 8, from 3:30-4:30 p.m., in Room 506 of the Coe Library. This free event is open to all UW students, staff and the public.

The forum will feature presentations from UW faculty on the development of their service-learning courses, as well as updates from students who have received the prestigious Stewart Family Service Award. The event will also provide information on funding opportunities for faculty and students interested in expanding their involvement in service-learning activities in 2025.

Guest speakers will include two faculty members selected as Community Engaged Faculty Institute Fellows for the 2023–24 academic year: Dan Fetsco, assistant professor of criminal justice in the College of Arts and Sciences, and Jennifer Ingwerson-Niemann, associate professor of sciences about animals from the College of Agriculture, Natural Sciences and Natural Resources. They will discuss their efforts to incorporate service learning into their courses.

Students who received the 2024 Stewart Family Serviceship Award will also showcase their service projects, each supported by a $5,000 grant:

— Jessica Petri, an undergraduate student from Green River, will present her project titled “Community Empowerment: Teaching English to Burmese War Refugees for a Brighter Future.” In cooperation with Karine National College, she runs English classes for Karenni refugees in Thailand. Petri is pursuing dual degrees in secondary social science and political science, with a Ph.D., summa cum laude.

— Graduate students Theresa Andrzejewski, Alison Tassone and Kaitlyn Breitenfeldt will present their project, “Laramie Autism and Developmental Services.” This initiative, in partnership with Albany County School District 1 and other local organizations, aims to provide free developmental screenings and ongoing psychological support for youth and families.

Andrzejewski is a fourth-year doctor of clinical psychology. student with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Samford University. Tassone is a second-year clinical psychology doctoral student. student with a bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University and an M.Ed. from Harvard University. Breitenfeldt is also a second-year Ph.D. student of clinical psychology, graduate of psychology at the University of Illinois.

The forum is sponsored by the Stewart Family Serviceship Award, the Wallop Civic Engagement Program, the Office of Community Engagement and the Office of Service, Leadership and Community Engagement.
