The storm in Limpopo left many people homeless, 90 injured

Provincial MEC for cooperative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs, Basikopo Makamu, said on Tuesday that strong winds and heavy rains also injured more than 90 people.

On Tuesday, Makamu assessed the damage caused by the storm.

“I’m going to talk to my MEC in charge of health, also to go to the hospital and see how we encourage the hospital and how we put more resources into the hospital to ensure that these people get help because this is definitely a disaster that will require everyone,” he said.

“I’m here from the Social Development Department. “They will be useful because they will be able to provide for families who may need food, as some may have lost everything right now.”

Makamu said destructive winds and heavy rains also hit Mopani, Vhembe, Sekhukhune and Waterberg districts, damaging several houses, schools and critical infrastructure, including power lines.

The provincial Department of Education is consolidating its report on the number of schools affected by the storm and is implementing measures to prevent disruptions to the ongoing high school leaving exams.

“The department is conducting a thorough assessment to determine the extent of the damage and provide necessary support,” said department spokesman Matome Taueatsoala.

“We would like to confirm that there are no reports of the interruption of secondary school leaving examinations in the province due to the reported damage.”
