Former SC State student charged in connection with 2023 campus shooting that injured 1

ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has charged a former South Carolina State (SC State) student in connection with a 2023 crime. shooting on campus.

On Thursday, October 24, 21-year-old Melvin Anthony Williams was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Arrest warrants show that on March 3, 2023, Williams fired a gun into a crowd of students, wounding one person in the leg.

A few months after the shooting, SLED 20-year-old Daniel Eugene Hutto was arrested. Before the attempted murder, he was charged with complicity.

Investigators say Hutto opened his book bag and allowed the suspect to use a gun, which he used to shoot at the crowd of students.

The S.C. State Police Department asked SLED to open an investigation.

Williams was booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center.

The case will be prosecuted by the 1st District Attorney’s Office.
